Two bros held from Kol for Rs.522cr GST evasion

The Directorate General of Goods and Services Tax Intelligence (DGGI), Jamshedpur regional unit, has arrested two businessmen brothers from Kolkata on charges of GST evasion to the tune of Rs. 522 crore for doing a business transaction of Rs. 3,000 crore.

DGGI Joint Director Ashutosh Kumar Singh said the accused Amit Gupta and Sumit Gupta were arrested from their residence in the Salt Lake area of Kolkata on Tuesday.

There were produced in a local court in Kolkata from where they were brought there on transit remand. Both were forwarded to jail following their medical check-up at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College and Hospital (MGMMCH) on Tuesday.

Singh also said the Gupta brothers are the kingpin of the GST fraud network over five states – Odisha, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu besides Jharkhand.

Earlies on February 28, Kolkata- based trader Shiv Kumar Deora was arrested by the Jamshedpur unit of the DGGI and based on his revelations, the Gupta brothers were arrested.

“Further investigation is underway and details of the case will be shared with the public soon, “Singh added.

Notably, Deora was arrested for committing the multi-crore fraud by generating fake invoice bills in the name of dummy companies.
