The 55th Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council meeting, chaired by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, introduced significant tax relief measures aimed at fostering economic growth and supporting critical sectors. The council exempted payment aggregators from GST on transactions below Rs 2,000, a move likely to benefit small businesses and promote digital payments across the country.
The State-Central Panel of GST Officials, also known as Fitment Committee has recommended that GST exemption under entry 34 of Notification No. 12/2017-CTR will apply to payment aggregators (PAs) for settlement services involving handling of money, but not for payment gateway (PG) functions.
The 54th GST Council is scheduled to meet on September 9 in New Delhi to deliberate upon a proposal to clarify that an 18% GST should be levied on payment aggregators whose platforms are used for digital payment transactions of less than ₹2,000 via debit cards, credit cards, and other payment methods, according to sources.
