Vedanta gets a penalty of Rs 15.4 Lakh from Orissa tax authorities
Vedanta has received a Rs 15.43 lakh penalty order from the Assistant Commissioner, GST & Central Excise, Jharsuguda, Orissa. The order pertains to the alleged wrong use of Central Value Added Tax (CENVAT) credits.
The Tax Payer made the payment and the authorities released the goods but refused to pass a final, reasoned adjudication order, contending that upon payment, the proceedings were “deemed to be concluded” under Section 129(5) of the Act.

Cash loan of over Rs.20,000 not a ‘legally enforceable debt’, rules Kerala HC
High Court has held that a cash loan exceeding Rs.20,000 does not constitute a ‘legal enforceable debt’ since such transactions are prohibited under the Income tax Act, 1961. Consequently, if a cheque issued for the repayment of such an illegal loan is dishonoured, the offence under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instrument Act would not be attracted.

AI tools enabled ₹11,000-crore of additional tax revenue in last 4 years: CBDT Chairman
Through the use of various artificial intelligence (AI) tools, the Income Tax Department has over the last four years encouraged more than one crore taxpayers to voluntarily update tax returns leading to ₹11,000 crore of additional tax revenue for the government, Central Board of Direct Taxes Chairman Ravi Agarwal said in an interview.
The Finance Minister extended her best wishes to the Income Tax Department on the occasion of the 166th Income Tax Day. She also congratulated the Department for its commendable work in efficiently drafting the New Income Tax Bill, 2025 within the stipulated timeline.
