Bihar beats the whole country in GST collection

Bihar has surpassed the entire country in GST collection. According to the report released at the national level, Bihar collected 23% more GST in May 2025 as compared to May 2024, while the national average growth during this period has been 16%. That is, Bihar’s GST collection has been 9 percent higher than the national average of the country. Thus Bihar has also got a big benefit in GST collection. Where Bihar had a GST collection of 1521 crores in May 2024, which has increased to 1871 crores in May 2025. Thus the state has benefited by about 23 percent in GST collection.

Less amount than neighbouring states

However, if we look at the amount, Bihar is still behind in GST collection as compared to its neighbouring states. While Bihar received Rs 1871 crore in May 2025, Jharkhand received Rs 2907 crore in the same period, which is 8 percent more than May 2024. Similarly, the GST collection of West Bengal was Rs 6321 crore, which is 18 percent more than last May. The GST collection of another big state Uttar Pradesh was Rs 9130 crore, which is 0.5 percent more than May 2024. In this way, even though Bihar’s GST collection increased by 23 percent to Rs 1871 crore in May 2025 as compared to May 2024, it is much less than other states. 

Only 6.5 lakh traders are registered under GST

According to the data, during this period 2.89 lakh returns were filed on the central server of GSTN and 3.63 lakh returns were filed on the state servers. Currently, only 6.5 lakh businessmen are registered under GST in the state. However, under the GST rules, those doing annual business of less than Rs 20 lakh are exempted from registering under GST.

6% more revenue earned

In fact, a total revenue of Rs 29,359.76 crore has been received from GST in the financial year 2024-25, which is six percent more than last year. Rs 27622 crore was collected in the year 2023-24.
