India responded to US President Donald Trump’s tariff threats by proposing to impose retaliatory duties on steel and aluminium, according to a notification sent to the World Trade Organization (WTO). India said it’ll collect duties worth $3.82 billion in retaliation, similar to the amount of US will collect from duties on Indian exports. US imposed 50% tariffs on steel and aluminium.

The government on Tuesday told Parliament that the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) maintain regular coordination and electronic data exchange to ensure smooth implementation of export promotion schemes.
The Tamil Nadu Hotel Owners Association, on Wednesday (September 4, 2025), announced a boycott of mineral water and beverage products manufactured by United States-based companies, as well as a plan to log out of food delivery apps, such as Swiggy and Zomato, and instead migrate to a home-grown app.
India is set to review import tariffs on over 30 items including luxury cars and solar cells, potentially leading to higher imports from the United States, a senior finance ministry official said.
