GST 2.0 to cut construction costs, boost housing demand from Sept 22

The Indian government’s “Next-Gen GST Reforms” are set to be implemented on Monday, September 22, 2025. These changes were approved by the GST Council led by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. It aims to simplify the tax structure by moving from a four-rate system (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%) to a primarily two-rate system: 5% (merit rate) and 18% (standard rate), in addition to a 40% special rate for sin/luxury goods.

GST Appellate Tribunal to see a glut of cases when it debuts in December

A glut of GST dispute cases will be transferred to the GST Appellate Tribunal as it starts hearings from December onward. As per the last count in 2023, there were 14,000 GST cases pending in different States and courts. Besides all the pending GST cases, fresh disputes will also be registered directly with the GST Appellate Tribunal from this month.
