A sales tax officer of Delhi govt has been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs. 40,000 from a tax consultant.
According to a CBI official, a case was registered on Wednesday against the sales tax officer, identified as Sunil, on allegations that he demanded a briber of Rs. 1 lakh from the complainant, a practicing tax consultant in GST and Income tax.
“The bribe was in exchange for resolving the issue of Input Tax Credit (ITC) of his client, Gupta Agency, and for dropping the proceedings for the cancellation of the agency’s registration,” the official said.
After negotiations, the suspect agreed to accept a bribe amount of not less than Rs. 40,000. “A trap was set, and Sunil was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe. Searches were conducted at the residential and office premises of the accused in Delhi. He was produce before the court,” the official said, adding Sunil was sent to judicial custody.
