Special All-India Drive Against Fake GST Registration- Menace and Safeguards

It has been noticed that fraudsters have been obtaining fake GST registration (GSTINs) on the basis of PAN and Aadhaar number of persons from economically weaker sections without their knowledge. In some cases, forged documents, such as forged electricity bills, property tax receipts, rent agreements, etc. are being used as proof of principal place of business to obtain fake GST registration. This is being done with an intent to defraud the revenue by passing fraudulent input tax credit without underlying supply of goods or services, which has resulted in huge revenue loss to the government exchequer.

To curb the revenue leakage, during the National Coordination meeting of the State and Central GST officers held at New Delhi on April 24, 2023, the issue of fake/ bogus registration under GST was deliberated. It was decided to launch a special all-India drive to identify such suspicious/ fake GSTINs. Resultantly, the CBIC vide
Instruction No. 01/2023-GST dated May 04, 2023 (“Instruction No. 1”) issued detailed guidelines for conducting special drive of verification PAN India, which has commenced from May 16, 2023, and will continue till July 15, 2023, wherein the Central and State GST authorities in a coordinated and systematic manner are conducting this special drive against the suspicious/ fake GST registration.
