TV makers want GST cut on large sets to offset high price of key component

Television manufacturers are pushing for a reduction in goods and services tax (GST) on TVs sized above 32-inches to 18% from 28% to offset a sharp rise in prices of open cell panels – the costliest part of LED TVs – imported from China.

Prices of open cells, which are mostly imported from 4-5 suppliers in China, have shot up by over 35% for TV sizes above 32-inches, leading to about 10% rise in prices of large-sized TVs in India, industry officials said.
