A total of 1.83 crore women in India filed their Income Tax returns in the assessment year 2019-20 and this number has increased by 25 per cent to 2.29 crore women in AY 2023-24, official data analysed by News18 shows.
The Assessment Year is the 12-month period from April 1 to March 31 that comes right after the financial year.
Data from the ministry of finance shows that Maharashtra has seen the highest increase in women ITR filers by 6.88 lakh — from 29.94 lakh in AY 2019-20 to 36.83 lakh in AY 2023-24. In terms of percentage increase, Maharashtra registered 23 per cent increase, below the national average.
Next in line was Uttar Pradesh with 4.62 lakh women added in the ITR web. The state reported a 29 per cent increase — from 15.81 lakh in AY 2019-20 to 20.43 lakh in AY 2023-24. Gujarat is the third state in the line with an addition of 4.41 lakh women ITR filers, a jump of 24 per cent.


In AY 2023-24, Maharashtra (36.83 lakh) was the state with the highest women ITR filers, followed by Gujarat (22.50 lakh) and Uttar Pradesh (20.43 lakh). The lowest three regions were Ladakh (205); Lakshadweep (1,125) and Mizoram (2,090).
In AY 2019-20 also, these states were at the top three positions — Maharashtra (29.94 lakh), Gujarat (18.08 lakh) and Uttar Pradesh (15.81 lakh). Ladakh (30), Mizoram (1,068) and Lakshadweep (1,108) were at the bottom three spots.
The increase of women ITR filers in Ladakh has seen the biggest jump in terms of percentage. There were just 30 women ITR filers in the Union Territory in AY 2019-20 that increased by almost seven times to 205 in AY 2023-24. The number of women ITR filers peaked in AY 2021-22 in the UT when the numbers were 269.
In Mizoram, the number of women ITR filers doubled between AY 2019-20 (1,068) and AY 2023-24 (2,090).
The consistent increase in the number of individuals filing their income tax returns reflects an expanding tax base and improved tax compliance.
