Ahead Of Thug Life’s Release Tamil Nadu Government Reduces Entertainment Tax, Here Are The Details

The Tamil Nadu government has reduced the Local Bodies Entertainment Tax (LBET) from 8.6 per cent to 4 per cent. The move comes in after actor Kamal Haasan appealed to the government, stressing on the struggles that the Tamil film industry is going through financially post the pandemic. This order will come to action ahead of the release of Thug Life which will release in theatres on June 5 and is likely to see a reduction in the movie ticket pricing.

Film Employees Federation of South India (FEFSI) expressed their gratitude to MK Stalin, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. They also thanked Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin and Minister for Tamil Development and Information Thiru MP Saminathan for the move.

TN Government Slashes Movie Ticket Prices

Earlier, actor-producer Kamal Haasan, who is set to enter Rajya Sabha as MP. He appealed to the state government to reduce the tax on Tamil films, citing the financial difficulties faced by the industry post-pandemic and rising production costs. He stated that the cordial relationship between the ruling government and the film industry. He also claimed that the party should necessary measures.

The revised order, issued under the Tamil Nadu Local Authorities Entertainments Tax Act, 2017, grants remission of the Local Body Tax specifically for Tamil films, recognising their cultural and economic importance.

As per the reduced rates, for New Tamil Films, a local body tax of 4% will be given, which was earlier at 8.6 per cent. This would make changes the ticket pricing and the profit margin for the stakeholders. The move is expected to reduce the ticket pricing, which will have more number of people at cinemas.
