The Centre must not charge GST on free housing in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, said housing industry representative body CREDAI – MCHI.

Industry representatives, in a meeting with union Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, said the flats to existing occupants/ slum dwellers/ tenants / flat owners are provided free of cost, and hence no GST should be charged. At present 10% GST (5% on rehab and 5% on sale component) is charged.
“Both are borne by the customer of the sale component. The cost of the flat increases and where the project is unable to absorb the additional cost put by GST on rehab, the project never takes off,” said CREDAI-MCHI in its representation.
