Gold smuggling case: Former UAE consulate officials fined Rs 12 crore; Prosecution takes action…

Thiruvananthapuram : Customs has imposed a fine of Rs 12 crore on former UAE consulate officials in the gold smuggling case. The RTI document also states that prosecution proceedings have been initiated against them. The former Consul General and and Admin Attaché-Ex-Charge d’Affairs of the UAE Consulate in Thiruvananthapuram were fined Rs. 6 crore each. The amount they paid was not disclosed.

This was clarified in a reply given by the Deputy Commissioner of the Kochi Customs Commissioner (Preventive) Office to Kochi-based RTI activist K. Govindan on 14.07.2025. The reply was that a fine was imposed for smuggling gold through diplomatic channels. The gold smuggling case had created a stir in Kerala politics with the inclusion of P.R. Sivashankar, the Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, as an accused.
