State Goods and Services Tax (SGST) department carried out raids in Bhopal, Katni and Shajapur on Friday following suspicion over unaccounted goods in storage for purpose of distribution ahead of elections.
Godown and business establishment of a Katni-based trader dealing in multiple commodities like tobacco, areca nut and electronic items was searched by team of SGST department while godown of another trader at Shajapur dealing in garments was raided by SGST team.
These traders were suspected to have kept unaccounted stocks of goods at unregistered godowns with an intention to evade taxes and use them as freebies during election.
“We conducted raids at multiple locations in the state and are targeting all such premises that come under suspicious category. We have carried out raids at Shajapur, Katni and Bhopal. There is a suspicion of involvement of these traders in distribution of freebies during elections. Some items found from the possession of these traders fall into the category of freebies. Further details would come after proper investigation,” said an official of state GST department on condition of ananymity.
