Why an ITR filing deadline extension is unlikely this year

The Income Tax Department is unlikely to extend the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) beyond July 31, 2024. Despite calls from taxpayers for an extension due to technical issues with the e-filing portal, the department looks firm on its original timeline.

Surge in ITR filings

The department reported over four crore returns filed by July 22, reflecting an increase compared to the same period last year when a similar number of returns had been filed by July 24.

Officials expect the total filings to exceed last year’s figure of 6.77 crore by the end of July.

Clarification on rumors

The department addressed rumors circulating on social media and some news outlets, confirming that there are no plans to extend the deadline.

Addressing technical glitches

While the e-filing portal has experienced technical glitches, prompting complaints from taxpayers and chartered accountant associations, the department is actively working to resolve these issues.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has engaged closely with service providers, including Infosys, IBM, and Hitachi, to address these problems.

The CBDT Chairman reassured taxpayers, stating, “We are engaging closely with our service providers. The volumes are high, and compliance is also good… I have been assured that the website will function properly.”

Filing options after the deadline

Taxpayers who miss the July 31 deadline can file a belated return by December 31, 2024, but should be prepared to pay penalties for late submissions.

Despite the challenges, the department encourages taxpayers to complete their filings promptly to avoid penalties and ensure compliance.
